The open data portal of Italy (www.dati.gov.it) provides access to several heritage geo-datasets such as Bella Lombardia (www.bellalombardia.regione.lombardia.it). The Superior Institute for Conservation and Restoration created and systematically maintains an operational distributed geo-spatial database for the entire country entitled “Risk Map” (www.cartadelrischio.it) supporting the scientific and administrative activities of Italian institutions responsible for protecting, safeguarding and preserving the cultural heritage. Many GIS applications and projects in cultural heritage have been already operationally implemented all over the country. Current situation: a) all levels of implementation, from local to national, b) GIS technology included within the national information infrastructure, c) GIS applications publicly available, d) main fields of application: heritage management, archaeology, historic monuments conservation, risk management.
